Sportsmanship
There's no "official" checklist for
Sportsmanship, but here are a few things I would try to remember:
1) Introduce yourself.
2) Smile.
3) Be humble.
4) Don't let your opponent's mood affect yours. Concentrate on having a good time-- it's
infectious.
5) Cheer your opponent, wish him luck, celebrate his successes and share his defeats.
6) Don't take advantage of your opponent-- did he forget to move something? shoot
something? assault somewhere? Remind him.
7) Never go to the rulebook to settle a dispute in your favor. It is ok to outwit
your opponent, but not to out-lawyer him.
8) Offer your opponent a d6 roll-off to settle any questions, then move on with the game.
9) If you feel it would be appreciated, offer honest advice.
10) Rate your opponent's sportsmanship honestly-- the system only works if you are honest.
Dreaded Knowledge Quiz
The knowledge quiz can be difficult, but it is open
book. Make sure you take ALL of your codexes and your rulebook with you to the tournament.
Of course it is best to know your fluff, but you won't know every obscure question they
ask, so it is useful if you can look it up.
The following questions will give you an idea what to expect:
1) Abbadon was originally a member of what
Space Marine chapter?
2) What was the name of the Tyranid Hive Fleet that attacked the Ultramarines home world?
3) What was the last chapter of the first founding?
4) True or False: Squads led by an Eldar Warlock are immune to pinning.
5) True or False: The Space Marine implant that allows a marine to gain the memories of
the slain by eating their flesh is called the omophagia.
6) What is the home planet of Ghazkhull?
7) Who is the Archon of the Emasculators?
8) Complete this quote: "The difference between treachery and heresy is..."
9) True or False: A sniper rifle can pin a squad.
10) Complete this quote: "No army is big enough to conquer the galaxy..."
Generalship
This should be the last of your concerns. In fact, GW has
eliminated the Best General category from their Grand Tourneys entirely! It is no
coincidence that you can score as many points-- or more-- on Sportsmanship as you can on
your battle performance. Ask yourself which is easier: Being a good sport, or guaranteeing
that you will win every game? Better to be a good sport and play for a draw or even a
loss, than to run roughshod over your opponent in pursuit of a win.
That said, your performance in the battles will factor into your Overall score, and there are a few things you can do to improve this:
1) Read the mission very
carefully, especially the objective.
2) Does the mission allow any special rules, like Night Fighting, Infiltrators,
or Deep Strike?
3) Is this a straight VP mission or is there a list of objectives (like Cleanse or Dawn
Raid)?
4) Concentrate on the objective first and foremost.
5) Once you have the objective secured, you can try for secondary objectives:
Did you reduce at least one of your opponents squads to 50% or less?
Have you managed to get out of your own deployment zone?
Have you been aggressive enough to push all the way into your opponent's deployment zone?
Can you completely push the opponent out of your own deployment zone?
Do you have an opportunity to kill the enemy Commander?
