THE HIVE FLEET PROJECT

What exactly is this project? My buddy Mike Hopkins was threatening to drop out of Egyptian Campaign 2000 because he didn't have time to paint his army. Pfft. I told him to box it up and send it to me. EC is less than two weeks away. Here we go!

03/21/00, 5:30 PM: SHIPMENT ARRIVES

03/21/00, 5:45 PM: SHIPMENT LOGGED IN
Two Hive Tyrants, 3 Zoanthropes, 1 Biovore w/ 6 mines, 10 Genestealers, 30 Termagants, 28 Hormagaunts, 4 bottles of paint (Lightning Blue, Red Gore, Bestial Brown, Bleached Bone). Thankfully most everything is assembled and primered. Hey! What, no brushes? You bastard! I got to wreck MY brushes for this?

03/21/00, 5:50 PM: START WORKING ON TERMAGANTS
I'm confident-- but just in case I'll start working on the things I don't have in my own collection first. If worse comes to worst, I'll let Mike use some of my painted Nids. Mike has had the audacity to demand a custom paint scheme, so I'll have to learn this new paint scheme as I go. Where better to start than on the lowly termagants?

Black Primer

Lightning Blue drybrush

Red Gore underbelly

Blue Ink Wash (watered down)

Bestial Brown/Bleached Bone

Pick out details.

03/21/00, 8:00 PM: FIRST BATCH OF 10 TERMAGANTS
(and this page) COMPLETED!
About 2 hours work to finish the first 10 termagants. I am SO going to finish all of this in time. Assuming Mike gives me the go ahead on this paint scheme, the rest of the army will be done to match. I look forward to the bigger critters so I have a little more room to work on the underbelly portions-- termagants are a little too hunched over to get the full effect.

Still waiting on some word from Mike about the bases. I'll base the entire army at one time once all the painting is complete.

Tomorrow night I'll mix it up a bit with Zoanthropes!

03/22/00, 6:55 PM-- 8:25 PM: ZOANTHROPES
Even though these don't look bad I'm not sure how this paint scheme is going to look across 80 models... As I painted these I kept thinking, "Cool model... but Zoats are cooler." What about my handful of OOP Zoats... Should I use them as Lictors, Warriors, or Zoanthropes?

03/23/00, 7:00 PM-- 9:00 PM: TERM-AGAINS...
Figured I better get back to the meat of the army, the stuff I can't proxy if I don't finish in time. I think I finally have a handle on this paint scheme... Blue ink really helps take the edge off the Lightning Blue. In addition to finishing another 10 termagants tonite, I also went ahead and based EVERYTHING. I just used plain ol' sand, top and sides, and it looks great. Makes a nice contrast to the bugs. Sand is a great finisher for your bases. It's irregular (big grains, little grains, light grains, dark grains) so it looks great "right out of the box." You don't have to paint it. You don't even have to pre-paint the base. Just put glue everywhere and dunk it into sand. And the best part is, sand is available in large quantities, for free, at your local playground. (Please do not approach the children.)

I also finalized the paint scheme on the Hormagaunts: Unlike the termagants the hormies have nice squishy red-gore heads. Looks kinda earthwormy! This paint scheme is growing on me as it gets easier-- although I have to tell you all, it was pretty easy to begin with! Paint, dammit, paint! Don't be a big sissy like Mike and keep putting it off forever. (Yeah! I called you a sissy! I'm painting your army for free, so you can damn well take a shot or two.)

03/28/00, 8:00 PM: CRUNCH TIME!
Because I know the suspense is killing Mike-- no more updates for a couple days! Gotta paint! Place your side bets now!

03/29/00, 9:00 PM: Oh, all right... a few teasers...

A case full of termagants and spore mines, and one (or is it two?) of the Hive Tyrants. Everything is now to at least stage 3: primered, blue drybrushed, and inked. Tomorrow night I put the final details on. I did say EVERYTHING, right? Now it's time to spend an hour or so on ol' Bugsnak... I'm gettin' the willies looking at that evil Tyrant! But then that might just be my Clockwork Orange soundtrack getting to me...
