The
Eldar
I had a relatively small Eldar army
rather nicely painted. I say "had" because I just sold
it to Ben to help finance a house, although I think that all it
really ended up financing was a few Imperial Guard tanks.
I have always liked the Eldar because of their high degree of specialization, and the ease with which I can paint them. I do find it to be a relative turn-off that they seem to be the "sissies" of the 40K universe, but I hope that my next Eldar army will not have this demeanor. Hurray for the new Guardians!
I don't have any tactics to offer as I haven't really had much experience with the Eldar in the new edition. I hope to post soon after the codex comes out. I do feel that they will probably fare relatively badly if you take a cross section of results. The reason I feel this way is that there are basically 2 armies that appeal to beginners - Space Marines and Eldar. The Space Marines are popular with beginners simply because they can do it all and are relatively easy to paint; and the Eldar because they are exotic and futuristic. The difference is that the Marines are a little more forgiving if a player makes a mistake while playing with them. The Eldar, on the other hand, are very specialized troops that generally need to be on the offensive. These factors can make them a poor choice for a new player. If I am at a con and see a nice Tyranid or Imperial Guard army, I generally figure that these are players who have been around a while. I certainly don't mean to cast any dispersions on our many marine players out there (I don't need any more beatings from devastator squads), these are just some generalizations.\
Imperial
Guard: Tallarn
My latest project has been trying to put together an IG army. I
have been mainly focusing on those models that I found enjoyable
to paint, i.e. Tanks. For this reason, along with my terrible
track record, I will avoid spouting strategy (for the most part).
I can't say that I particularly like playing with vehicles as I
think that 28mm is not the appropriate scale for more than 1
vehicle per side, but I enjoy painting them, so what the hell. It
is also amusing to see your opponents worry over your Demolishers
(before they put a power fist through the hull). I have focused
my time on the tanks and also use two of the IG mortar teams. I
don't think these teams are particularly useful in general terms,
but they are awful fun to shoot down any Dark Eldar Raiders that
happen to be scurrying around.
Despite the fact that I have a miserable record with the Imperial Guard, I have managed to compile a list of things NOT to do:
Move
Field a Hellhound
Move
Plan on killing anything you only shoot one weapon at (yes, even if that one weapon is a Demolisher)
Move
Take more than 4-5 direct fire tanks (they generally get in the way of each other's line of sight)
Move
Forget that your mortar crews have lasguns. Your opponents will forget this, sometimes with amusing results (2 teams = 24 shots at under 12 inches).
