Dark Angels vs Orks
Death by Moonlight

Warboss Bugsnak was riding high at the head of a mighty Deathskull Waaaaaaaaagh! His boyz had already swept over most of the planet, meeting little resistance and bolstering their firepower with looted guns and ammo. The recent addition of a too-clever Dok had juiced him and his Nobz up with bioniks, cybork parts, and other orky know-what's-- and mostly for free, since the Dok liked to tinker and was willing to bolt on pretty much whatever scrap you brought him. And after all, Bugsnak thought, his eye only occasionally itched around the now-empty socket where the Dok had welded the control conduit to his bionik arm.
Scouts had just returned bearing rumors of a huge garage and fuel dump nearby. The Waaaagh was pretty much without any decent wheels at the moment, so Bugsnak jumped at the chance-- even if it just turned out to be just a few new tires for the Skorchas. As they broke through the tree cover and stared up at the buildings on the ridge ahead, they all realized there was more  fun to be had here than just picking through abandoned humie loot: The boyz were gonna get another good tumble with the beakies! The Marines had spread out across the ridge, obviously trying to hold his boyz back from the garages. Whatever was over that ridge was surely valuable, and Bugsnak vowed to break past and find out for himself.

About Our Sponsors: What's The Deal?
On account of the unprecedented coolness of Batreps, we got an email from Great Canadian Miniatures asking if they could advertise on our site. Well, rather than settle for the normal "banner" routine (which pays a pittance anyway, considering what we sink into this hobby) we've worked out a cool deal with GCM for-- what else?-- cheap miniatures. Being as this site is only as popular as the readers make it, we're going to get you in on the deal as well.

The banner above says 25% off, but Batreps (and you) can get 30% off instead. Here's how it works. Every now and then the Batreps guys get a bug up their ass to try something new-- a big tank, a new squad, whatever. We get an additional discount on that item if we buy from Great Canadian, and when that item appears in a Batrep here, you can get it too. We're not making a killing off this advertising deal, we're just accumulating bigger armies, happily supporting a GW retailer, and giving you the chance to do it as well.

It's sort of like the way it works in White Dwarf, only instead of trying to sell you a bunch of naff and weedy crap, you'll be getting the cream of the crop from what the Batreps guys think is cool. Guys who really play the game. Guys who unabashedly beat the crap out of each other-- ok, mostly we just beat the crap out of Andy-- and who have a realistic view of which miniatures are really worth adding to your army. Not Cypher. Not Solar Macharius or any of that other stuff you don't allow in your games. Good stuff: Rhinos. Razorbacks. Wyches. Scads of Gretchin. The kind of stuff we want to play with because it really wins games (except maybe for Andy).

Right now they're offering
30% off of everything until the end of February 2000. In the meantime, we're putting together a shopping list of stuff we want to add to the various Batreps armies. When we've got them all painted up, we'll use them in a Batrep so you can see how they did, and maybe pick some up yourself at 30% off.

We now return you to Andy's much anticipated beating at the hands of my new Ork army...

Death by Moonlight
This is the scenario that comes in the Dark Angels Codex and it works like this: The Dark Angels deploy across the center of the board and have to keep the Orks from "punching through." It uses Hidden Setup, Night Fighting, and Random Game Length. The Orks win if they can draw a line from one table edge to the other that contains at least one Ork model within 8", and no Dark Angels models within 8". In other words, the Orks have to punch a hole through the Dark Angel line and control that column when the game ends.

Andy and Brian (skirt-wearing bolter buddies): I knew that my Dark Angels would be able to take whatever the Orks could dish out. It was just a matter of how thin I could spread my forces before the inevitable weakness of doing so would set in. Originally Brian and I had Snipers instead of the Bike Squadron, but we realized that mobility would be more important, to shore up the battle line wherever and whenever it needed it.

Ben, Scott, Buddy (He-Man Marine Haters Club): As much as possible, I wanted to use the miniatures I had painted up over the Christmas break. This meant my army wasn't very well suited to this mission at all-- no Retinue to speak of and almost all my troops were on foot. And a pittance of Gretchin! A worthless mob of ten and only nine for my Big Gunz! The plan-- as well as we could implement it among three Ork Kaptins-- was to concentrate on getting the Warboss and Skarboyz into "winning" position, and use the rest of the army to distract the Marines from the south end.

Deployment: The Dark Angels line was spread out pretty evenly across the table. The mission uses Hidden Set-Up so the Ork commanders were staring down at lots of slips of paper, trying to figure out what was what. A slip of paper tucked away between two hills was surely the Whirlwind-- but what was the lone slip of paper guarding the southernmost hill? Ben figured if anything was going to be down there, it was going to be the Vindicator, so he advised to deploy towards the north. Buddy rationalized that they wouldn't place the Vindicator so far to the south because if the Orks chose to arrive in the north, it would be out of the battle placed so far away. His argument won out, and the Orks deployed heavy to the south. His astute observation that the Vindicator would be in the center of the table was spot on-- the phantom "Vindicator" turned out to be a Ravenwing Speeder with a life expectancy of nanoseconds if it chose to hang around down by the Warboss. Very little to resist the might staring it down from scant inches away. That was where the Orks planned to punch through.

the speeder is just off the picture to the left, facing down the warboss from left to right: command squad, whirlwind, termies/vindicator, tac squad and dread
The core of the Dark Angel deployment.

from left to right: sluggas and kommandos, gretchin, lootas/flash gitz in woods, warboss and skarboyz
The Orks deploy towards the south side,
with the Warboss holding the far flank.
