Eldar vs Dark Eldar
Sabotage!

A remote tower of high sorcery, long deserted by arcane ancestors of the Eldar, has fallen into the hands of the depraved Dark Eldar. The Eldar host lands in force many miles away, drawing the enemy away from the tower so that a smaller, more mobile strike force can sneak in and destroy the tower, burying its secrets for all eternity.

Ben and Brian (good and pure Eldar): Every now and then we like to team up and just kick the shit out of Andy's Dark Eldar. Nothing beats dropping an ordnance template on a skiff and watching every poor bastard on board stagger off and die. Despite Andy's handicaps in the strategy and luck department, he sometimes manages to surprise us, as today's battle will show.

Andy (scurvy Dark Eldar pirates): I really didn't know what mission I would be playing, so I tried to make my Army List as general as possible. I knew the miniatures that the Eldar would be fielding, so I tried to find some stuff that historically has given them some trouble. Sabotage is a difficult mission, and the fact that my units would move in from a random table edge, made transportation a problem. Since I was the defender, with scarely any troops, I knew that the ones I had would have to delay my opponents as long as possible.

Dark Eldar Deployment: The Dark Eldar were permitted to deploy only HQ and Troops units. We set the standing stones within 8" of the tower, so the Archon and both Raiders had to park inside that area. There were also 6 Warriors positioned on the board as sentries. Since Andy had no idea which short edge of the table we would arrive from, he just put three on each end.

Surprise! The Archon stayed home to guard the tower.

The Eldar Ambush: The Sabotage scenario uses the very cool rules for Sentries. Sentries tend to wander about aimlessly. Both players roll a die; the high roll moves the sentry that many inches in any direction. Each sentry has a spotting distance equal to his Initiative characteristic; thus, Andy's Warriors would automatically spot us if we were within 5 inches at the start of his turn. He would also raise the alarm if we fired a weapon. We could try to assassinate the sentries in hand-to-hand, but even then there was a 50/50 chance that the noise would be heard.

There was a big hill at one end of the table, and we decided to just try to sneak past the sentries by going around the hill. We figured we would win control of at least one of the sentries so we could move him away from our forces. We figured wrong.

Andy ended up not only winning control of his sentries each time, he won big-- rolling 5 or 6 inches of movement for each one. The sentries were rapidly closing in on us. Brian and I had a disagreement here: He was all for trying to keep sneaking, while I had control of the Banshees and was ready to kick some ass and take my chances with an outcry. As it turned out, Brian ended up having to attack the sentry with his Warp Spiders! The sentry was killed but the alarm was raised-- and the race to the objective was on!
