TURN TWO- Imperial Guard: With their mortars finally in position, the Imperial Guard unleashed an accurate barrage into the ruins hiding the scouts. One marine was caught unawares and killed, but Sgt. Pius quickly ordered the survivors to get down and take cover. The Armored Fist rolled into position behind Tactical Squad Caius, whereupon its multilaser quickly chewed through the weak rear armor, destroyed the crew, and even killed one of the passengers. Sgt. Caius staggered out just in time to see a melta-blast from inside the Chimera vaporize several chunks of concrete and, unfortunately, another one of the scouts.

The Basilisk made an abrupt turn and headed into a grove of trees atop a small hill. From this vantage point it had a clear shot at the Whirlwind, as well as a commanding view of the marine deployment zone. Any reinforcements would have to pay careful attention to that big gun.

The "Iron Chimera" begins its deadly rampage, clearing a path for the Basilisk to deploy.

TURN TWO- Space Marines: Eager to join the battle, the Space Marine commanding officer, Brother-Chaplain Lucius, sped ahead of his bike escort and headed down a path through the forest, intending to distract the guard on their far flank. Brother-Ancient Innocent trundled onto the field just on the other side of the woods and let fly with his twin-autocannons. The shells pierced the fuel tanks of the Hellhound, destroying the fearsome flame cannon and immobilizing the treads. The Devastators poured more lascannon fire into the remaining Russ but only succeeded in rocking the gunner. Still, at this range, it was enough.

The Whirlwind poured its deadly salvo into the hapless Ratlings, but its shots went wild. Fortunately the Land Speeder had arrived, and its heavy bolter finished off another two snipers. The remaining Ratling went to ground and left the Vindicare to his fate.

The Predator wheeled back towards the action and began what would be the first in a long series of useless salvos against the Armored Fist, soon to be known as "The Iron Chimera." The tactical squad moved to the side to pour bolter fire and plasma into the side of the Chimera, while the Predator nailed it squarely with its twin-linked lascannon. The massed salvo slid off the Chimera like butter off a hot knife. Bolstered by the knowledge that Guard APC's were notoriously weak, Caius led his squad into an assault against the sides of the Chimera, but was surprised once again as his squad failed to pierce the armor.
